WASHINGTON, DC – Secretary of the Navy Carlos del Toro has named the next America-class large-deck amphibious warship after Operation Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

Following del Toro’s announcement, Marine Corps Commander Gen. Eric Smith spoke about his experience as commander of the 8th Regimental Combat Team in Helmand in 2011.
