Warhammer 40k Space Marines 2 gets Helldivers 2-style co-op mode

In the dark darkness of the 41st Millennium, there’s only war for certain. There’s blood, there’s guts, there’s loads of gore, and then there’s the Tyranids where it all comes from. As Captain Titus, you’re tasked with cutting your way through the waves of xenos. Warhammer 40k Space Marines 2But unlike its predecessor, you won’t have to go it alone: that’s right, Space Marine 2 has its own Helldivers 2 style cooperative PvE mode, and we spoke to Creative Director Oliver Hollis-Leick to find out more about it.

Announced during the Warhammer Skulls 2024 Showcase, Warhammer 40k: Space Marines 2’s PvE mode – called ‘Operations’ – puts a three-man squad at the center of Tyranid annihilation action. From there, hack and slash your way through the hordes as one of his six distinct classes that bring unique playstyles to the alien battlefield. “One of the best features of our PvE mode is that it is deeply tied to the story,” he tells me. “One of the challenges in making a game like Space Marines 2 is that you’re trying to portray the Warhammer War. It’s not an isolated battle, it’s one city or one planet. It’s not going to happen.

“Our war is taking place across three planets in the solar system and we want to make sure we convey this military campaign. We have a battle barge where all the Space Marines meet up and connect, and you can see ships taking off and going out to battle and then coming back and being repaired.

“PvE system [lets you play] “Another perspective from this war,” he continues. “They deal with objectives that contribute to Titus’s campaign, and you can communicate with them in real time through Vox. This means you’ll hear conversations with Titus in the campaign, and then as a PvE Space Marine, you’ll be able to communicate with them in real time. You get to actually play on the other side of a radio conversation and see what was going on in the background of that call.

“This is a really great way to give a more in-depth look at the bigger picture of this ongoing war while still allowing for a very replayable gameplay system.”

Warhammer 40k Space Marines 2 has added a new Helldivers 2 style co-op mode: three Space Marines from Warhammer 40k race through densely forested swamps

When I asked if new missions would be added as the game progresses (think Prime Orders from Helldivers 2), Hollis-Reich said that Operations “act as an additional ring around the campaign, so they’re still part of the story. You can replay missions, but we can modify them and change things up very easily.” He said that this format is a perfect starting point for “introducing a lot of stuff later.”
